What is Measuring Up?

Measuring Up is both a guide and a process that assists communities in assessing and improving how accessible and inclusive they are for people with disabilities and others including seniors, parents pushing baby carriages, tourists carrying luggage, and people with injuries. By increasing accessible employment opportunities and improving public spaces, recreation facilities, restaurants and shops, Measuring Up is assisting communities in becoming more accessible and inclusive, so everyone can benefit.
Kelowna's Part
The Measuring Up process in Kelowna has progressed through the development and facilitation of a Steering Committee comprising community members interested in assessing and promoting accessibility and inclusion for all citizens.
The Steering Committee has been engaged in the process of reviewing the Measuring Up guide in preparation of an inventory and initiation of the assessment of accessibility and inclusion in our community. All stakeholders have been and continue to be asked to participate throughout this community development process.
The Steering Committee has worked with the appropriate municipal staff and committees to encourage City Council to pass resolutions endorsing the Steering Committees work, and to promote the 10 by 10 challenge.
Most importantly, individuals with disabilities have been and continue to be consulted throughout this process to ensure that they have a voice, and are contributing to creating a fully accessible, welcoming and inclusive community.
Community Collaboration
The work of the Measuring Up Steering Committee respectfully acknowledges the hard work of all interest groups in Kelowna that have previously made great strides toward building an accessible and inclusive community for people with disabilities in Kelowna. This effort is reflected in the establishment of the Central Okanagan Access Awareness Team (COAAT) and the City of Kelowna’s Disability Advisory Committee, both of which seek to promote accessibility and inclusion in our community and currently work towards many of the goals outlined in the Measuring Up process. Together we share and develop information with an interest in partnership for inclusion and engagement to develop improvements within the spirit of the Measuring Up process.
